Five years later...

Al Qaeda targeted the World Trade Center in part because it was the home of the New York Mercantile Exchange. That is where crude oil futures are traded and the price of crude oil and it's products are set in a free market.
I have read and seen on television that if the same attack were carried out on the Sears Tower, that due to it's design, it would not have collapsed. It is designed and constructed as if it is nine separate buildings banded together.
On September 11th, 2001, I was working across the street from Sears Tower. As my colleages and I, along with the rest of the world, watched the World Trade Center burn and later collapse, I noticed that everytime there was a loud noise, many heads would jerk to look out the window at the Sears Tower across the street. Since that day, whenever there is a loud noise, I notice heads turn around to make sure the Sears Tower is still intact.
It is five years later. I am employed by a different company a couple blocks away from my previous firm. However, September 11th, 2006, there is a thunderstorm outside. Everytime I hear the clap of thunder, I see numerous heads turn around and look out the window at the Sears Tower. I'm not sure what they are thinking, but I assume they are checking to make sure it is intact...

How deeply we are scarred when we instinctively react as you described.
I will never be the same from my husband's stroke and seizures. If he starts slurring his words, if his eyes glaze over. . . if he sounds like he is choking, my heart pounds with fear, "Is it happening again?"
